Gill is the author of the Sunday Times bestselling Miss Austen, which was picked as one of the best novels of the year by the Times, Observer and Stylist. She repeated her success with Godmersham Park. This original, emotionally complex novel is set in 1804 and follows Anne Sharp, who was a governess who became close to Jane Austen and her family. To add local interest Rye has been used as a location in the recently filmed TV adaptation of her work.
