Hello. My grandma, now 81 was born nearby and lived in Rye for most of her young life.
In the 1940’s, she met a man from Yorkshire (my grandad) and within the next few years, they moved up to a mining community in Yorkshire.
My grandad unfortunately died in 1992.
In 2001, I told my grandma that services on the East Coast Main Line now reach Kings Cross from Doncaster in just over 90 minutes.
As she had a 91 year old sister in Rye named May Baldock and a niece in Croydon, I finally got her to travel to the Relatives in Croydon from which they took her back to Rye to see her Sister for the first time in 10 years.
Since then, May Baldock suffered various problems that meant she couldn’t look after herself and she was moved to a residential Home in Haywards Heath and unfortunately a few months ago, she was moved from Haywards Heath to a 24/7 care nursing home.
Last December the 27th, I travelled from this location up in Yorkshire to Rye for the afternoon.
I called in the Fish and Chip shop on The Mint, had a walk around and my grandma was so pleased that I was able to return a local Rye paper to her that very evening!
She also loved to hear the updates about whats happening in the town.
Therefore, in my agenda, I have made December the 27th Rye Day.
From now on, unless there are more urgent engagements, I shall visit the Delightful town of Rye every December the 27th.
