Message for Paddyanne Turner

Paddyanne Turner: I think there were two such places. The Old Alms Houses (workhouse?) were on Military Road where I lived many years ago.
The Rye Hospital is on Rye Hill although I think the original one was on Mermaid Street from what I remember my father told me. Hope this helps.. Try finding a copy of Leo Vidler’s “History of Rye” where there will be the details.

Paddyanne Turner: I remember visiting the Playden Ward at Hill House Hospital as a child, it was the ward for the severly menally handicapped. For some reason our English Teacher took us up there. Hill House was demolished by a local property developer and is now a housing estate at the top of Rye Hill towards Playden, before you get to the cottage hospital. I don’t know when it was knocked down or abandoned because I left Rye for over 20 years and only came back recently.

It doesn’t exist any more. You may be able to find out more from the planning people at Rother District Council.

    Regards,

    Martin
