I am seeking information about and also any paintings or sketches by the American artist Dewey Bates who lived in the Rye area in the 1890s. He painted several scenes of the Rye and the vicinity and lived firstly in a cottage at East Guldford and latterly at Lucknow Place, where he was living when he died in 1898. If anyone has any information about him (apart from what can be found via the internet) it would be gratefully received. Likewise if anyone has any of his works, especially unlisted pencil sketches, these would be of interest possibly with a view to buying, if for sale. Thanks.

I wondered whether you had found out anything more about Dewey Bates. I am very interested in his image of the artist’s studio in The Portrait 1882. I think he painted this work when he was living at Red Lion Square in London. Any information that you have about his whereabouts etc around that date would be wonderful. I have got in touch with Peter Nahum who sold the picture a few years ago. His website says that Bates’ studio and house were in Philadelphia but I rather doubt that.
