Following Captain James Cook’s discovery of the islands of Hawaii the relationship between the two sovereign nations was surprisingly close. During the 19th century the connection combined diplomacy, state visits and strong cultural and political ties. Annexation by the United States in 1898 changed everything, evidenced by Graham’s deportation and relocation to Rye after 36 years as a community leader and Hawaiian Kingdom citizen.
