Husband and I have just returned from a short break in Rye, which we thoroughly enjoyed. During our 3 day visit we visited two historic houses (Knowle in Kent and Bateman’s in East Sussex) and one garden (Scotney Castle Garden) and enjoyed a walk along the Royal Military Canal about which I knew nothing until I read the novels of Nina Dufort (Educating Edmund and Painting Out Oscar). Coming from Devon, we were pleasantly surprised by the relatively traffic-free roads. And we especially enjoyed the drive between Rye and Appledore, through the lush meadows of the Romney Marsh, with the Hawthorne in bloom and sheep grazing contentedly, as if they were in gardens! 250 miles was a a long journey for a few days, but it was certainly worth it.
