Carolyn McMillan: I’ve just seen your message on the Rye website. Last year we stayed at Playden Cottage Guesthouse, Military Road, Rye (phone: 01797 222234)which (then) had a 5 diamond guest accommodation rating and an English Tourism Council Silver Award (1999). In their brouchure the owners say that “The cottage’s only claim to fame is that the local opinion has it that E F Benson called it Grebe in his novels about Mapp and Lucia, but we do assure you that the house is several fet above the high-water mark!”
So, if you’ve not yet book your accommodation, you could perhaps stay in one of the houses in the novels!
Best wishes,
Margaret (Powling)
