Rye in East Sussex Town Guide

History of Rope Walk

I have been trying to trace the history of the residents of no’s 2 – 16 Rope Walk. Previosly known as 1 – 8 Seymore Place. I have traced the history back to 1841 but due to the unreliability of the census register, I have some inconsistencies. Does anyone have relatives that they have been able to trace back as living in these cottages. Some of the names are Tiltman, Southerden, Frankham, Gafford. Tatham. Any information will be of great assistance.

Hi Deborah, My GGrandfather lived at no. 4 Seymour Place one William Tiltman son of Richard and Jane. The 1871 census shows a total 11 Tiltmans at that one address, somewhat overcrowded in the tiny terrace house. I was in Rye last week and went to Rope Walk Seymour Place is still visible on the very end terrace on the upper tiling.
    Hope this helps.
    Tony Tiltman Jnr.
