Rye in East Sussex Town Guide

River Cafe, Strand Quay

Hi I own the River Cafe on the Strand Quay and it has been rented out to John and Bob. Their tenancy expires at the end of October this year and I will be taking it back for the first time since 2005. It has had various tenants in its brief history, but none of them have fully understood what this bizarre little ‘shack’ I created in 2004 is all about.

As lifestyles change due to the recession, I’ve decided to completely redecorate the place. With winter around the corner, its to have a hot Moroccan theme, tapas style food available all day and evening, at sensible prices; a fully licensed bar; and all the tables and chairs will be on the deck under the marquee, replaced with sofas and a lounging area inside – relaxation and papers, internet and great music…..a place to relax and be inspired.

There are moorings available for FREE and I want to relaunch and provide Rye with something, frankly, it hasn’t got.

I shall post the opening night on this board and if you’re interested in coming you can email me on [reveal email] . cheers, Alli

Hi Alli. Just reading your post on the River Cafe re-launch. It sounded like a good idea. How did it go? I was at school in Rye but live in Ireland now where I have a restaurant with my wife and daughters. I was a bit bored and thought I’d snoop around Rye from a distance. We are hoping to move back within the next year or two before my teenage daughters put down too deep roots and will be in the market to take on something in the catering line in Rye. Your name sounds very familliar. My name is Oli Smith and I’m 45 years old. I went to Thomas Peacoke.

Hi, how are you? I’ve changed it to ‘The Marquee’ and gone a bit wild and wacky with the interior … guess you’ll have to see it! love the idea of letting you run it!!! I’m putting in a beach volleyball pitch to liven up the Strand Quay and Rye generally. If you need accomodation I’ve got a flat at the oast thats free at the moment … re schools, I went to bolton girls school, tho have lurked in the area for 11 years as resident, and 6 years prior to that doing film shoots, castings, styling, on site catering etc. mmmmm fate’s a strange thing … you never know what might happen. exciting tho, cheers, Alli PS got fantastic plans for the Marquee (cafe) etc.

Do you still have moorings available? I run a local (Rye based) electrical contractors, and we are looking to expand into the marine market, as we are surrounded by water, and I would be interested in putting a boat there, while I learn to sail.
