Rye in East Sussex Town Guide

Edward Tiltman and Emma Levitt

My Great Great Grandfather was Edward Tiltman, born 1858 in Rye, Sussex. He married Emma Levitt (born 1854 in Northiam) in Rye in 1877, and they had two daughters that I can find – Mary Ann Tiltman born 1880 Rye, and Elizabeth Caroline Tiltman born 1882 Rye.

In 1891 both daughters were living at Children’s Home, Brides Cottage, Willingdon, Sussex.

I am completely unable to find what happened to their parents. I’m unable to find their death records or any remarriages, or either of them in any census after 1881. They have disappeared after 1882!

Edward was a Porter – Tallow Chandler in 1881, and the family were living in Ockman’s Lane, Rye.

Would anyone be able to help me to trace what happened to my GG-Grandparents?

Thank you!

I have just seen your message, about Emma Levitt. my fathers family were from Northiam but the family name was Levett ,a well known farming name in that area.I’m wondering if over the years someone has spelt it with an I instead of an E . just a thought.
